Petrified Wood Sphere
Petrified wood is the common name for wood that has turned to stone. Wood begins a petrification process once it is buried in sediments with very little exposure to oxygen. Overtime, the mineral rich water from the soil will replace the organic cells of the wood with inorganic elements like carbon (black), cobalt (green/blue), chromium (green/blue), copper, (green/blue), iron oxides (red/brown/yellow), manganese (pink and orange), manganese oxides (black or yellow) and silica (white/grey/blueish white) to name a few. This process can happen very quickly, in as little as 1000 years, and it is the combination of these minerals and colours that creates a truly unique fossil specimen each time.
This petrified wood specimen is from the Triassic age, and is approximately 220 million years old. A type of Araucaria petrified pine wood, this particular tree type is commonly referred to as the "Monkey Puzzle Tree" and is found in Madagascar.
The sphere represents completion, the realization of all possibilities. To carve a sphere one must cut away a mass of rock which can be as much as ten times the finished creation. Thus a sphere symbolizes all that we need to release in order to reach our goals and attain perfection. Many use a sphere while meditating as they believe it helps to release worry and may help to take them to a deeper state.
A sphere is also the perfect centerpiece for a crystal arrangement or rock altar. In feng shui, the ancient art of creating optimal energy flow in an environment, a sphere is ideal to place in the center of a room for its balancing abilities.
This sphere is hand carved and has some irregularities in the polishing due to the various hardness of the different minerals composing this stunning piece of history.
