Chalcedony is a translucent agate, often without the lines or veins of other agate. Moon chalcedony is a girasol or opalized version of regular chalcedony, and may have chatoyance. It is often more milky in appearance than regular chalcedony. The “fog” of moon chalcedony is caused by aluminum along with water that occurred within the quartz during the formation process. This unique set of conditions caused the girasol to form. It also classifies this gemstone as a type of Opal. It ranges in colour, but is most often found in shades of orange, red, and pink/purple. In rarer cases it is found in green, yellow, blue or grey tones as well.
